An Unexpected Beginning
My husband's departure was approaching, and with it came the fear of losing my sense of safety. He would soon be working out of state for the foreseeable future, and I knew what that would mean for me. Sleepless nights, checking every hiding place when I returned home, and constantly reassuring myself that I was alone. I had lived that way before, and the thought of returning to it was overwhelming.
I began searching for a companion who could offer both comfort and protection. I wanted a guardian breed, a dog who would watch over our home and property, alert me to anything unusual, and provide a reassuring presence.
After researching different breeds, I shared the qualities I was looking for with my husband. His response was simple: “What about a Cane Corso?”
My first thought was, What's that?
When he showed me, I was immediately captivated and intimidated. The Cane Corso was magnificent, powerful, and unlike any dog I had owned before. Although I wasn't a first-time dog owner, it had been nearly two decades since I'd had a dog, and I'd never owned a large guardian breed.
Still, the more I learned, the more I realized how well the Cane Corso's characteristics aligned with what I needed. The question wasn't whether this breed could be right for me. It was whether I was prepared to make the commitment this extraordinary dog deserved.
The Puppy With the Purple Collar
Over the following months, I immersed myself in everything I could learn about responsibly owning a Cane Corso. I listened to podcasts, watched videos, read books, and researched training, temperament, and the responsibilities that come with owning such a powerful, intelligent breed.
Eventually, we found a breeder we trusted. After many conversations, we placed a deposit with the understanding that we would travel to meet the breeder, the parents, the litter, and the puppy they had selected for us.
One long weekend, we packed our bags and made the drive out of state.
Until that visit, I don't believe I had ever seen a Cane Corso in person. The dogs were beautiful, but their commanding presence was intimidating. Their deep bark, intense stare, and powerful stature were everything I had read about, yet experiencing it firsthand was entirely different.
I admitted my uncertainty to the breeder, who reassured me, “This pup will be yours; you'll raise him.”
Looking back, I think what they really should have said was, “You'll be his; you'll learn together.”
As we approached the litter, the breeder picked up a tiny puppy wearing a purple collar.
“I selected purple puppy for you,” they said. “This is the one I would have picked for myself.”
Because we had no other animals at home that could expose the young litter to illness, the breeder gently placed the four-week-old puppy in my hands.
Immediately, he wrapped his little paws tightly around my hand, almost as if he were holding on.
Weeks later, when we returned to bring him home, he did the very same thing.
That little purple puppy would become Rhys, and neither of us knew just how much our lives were about to change.
Four Years Later, A Love That Gives Back
Four years and a handful of months later, the journey Rhys and I have shared has been nothing short of extraordinary.
We continue to learn from one another every day. Not a day passes that I don't appreciate the safety, companionship, and unwavering connection he brings into my life.
Along the way, countless people have helped shape our relationship. Trainers, holistic veterinarians, independent pet shop owners, and others who have generously shared their knowledge have influenced how I care for Rhys and how we function together as a team.
We aren't perfect, and we never will be. But we continue to grow because of the commitment I've made to understanding and caring for this remarkable dog.
I'm not a Cane Corso expert. I'm simply an owner who has experienced firsthand the intelligence, sensitivity, loyalty, and extraordinary awareness of a dog who seems completely tuned in to me.
Rhys has given me so much more than the sense of security I originally sought. He has taught me patience, responsibility, trust, and the meaning of a truly extraordinary bond.
I believe every Cane Corso deserves someone equally committed to understanding and caring for them.
